METEORS, THE

In 1980 P. Paul Fenech (v/g) and Nigel Lewis (v/b) split from their current Rockabilly band "Raw Deal" ,added Mark Robertson (d) from a Punk band called "The Models" and started to experiment with  a new and unique sound. The "boppin with my baby "- style lyrics were replaced by their own interests like horror and s/f... The pure Rockabilly sound changed into something ...yeah, completely new: Psychobilly. Parts of the Rockabilly audience were shocked. After their second or third gig as The Meteors, they get comments like : " Your drummer can´t play, he´s got green hair!" But soon the Meteors got a new loyal following known as the "Crazies" or the "Zorchmen".

In March 1981 "Meteor Madness", a 4 track EP, was released. It was the soundtrack to a short movie that included the boys and Keith Allen as the devil.  In August the Meteors signed to Island Records and recorded their first album "In Heaven", definitive  the first Psychobilly longplayer. The rest is history.....They have made no less than 30 official albums, countless singles, not to mention dozens of compilations and re-issues. Frontman Paul Fenech has also released five solo albums.

Although there have been lineup changes over the years, (Paul Fenech being the only original member), the Meteors sound never completely changed. You can argue until the end of time, if only the Meteors are pure Psychobilly (and I don´ t agree!), but there´s no doubt that they are at least the first Psychobilly act and the Godfathers of our music.
